ABOUT THE SEAWASTE NETWORK

SEAWASTE stands for the 'Southern and East Africa Waste Management Network'. The network was first envisioned at a Waste Management and Marine Pollution Prevention Workshop, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in April 1998. This workshop, which was attended by 40 participants from 15 African countries, concluded with consensus on the need for improved networking activities within the region.

In 2001, 16 delegates representing 13 African countries held a workshop under the auspices of the London Convention Office and International Maritime Organisation (IMO), to discuss the possibility of developing a network for enhanced cooperation on water pollution issues. The workshop lead to a concept document (Download 2001 report in PDF format) outlining the purpose, focus and constituency of the network.

Purpose and focus

The SEAWASTE Network serves as a platform for information exchange and cooperation on pollution issues that impact on all aquatic environments in southern and east Africa. It represents an informal forum for dialogue and capacity-building in waste management research, policy development and implementation and wider public education.

Presently, the network consists of members from 13 African countries, namely Botswana, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Involvement is however not restricted to African countries.

Registered members are able to contribute to and receive, print- and electronic editions of the network's newsletter. Registration also enables users of this site to gain access to more interactive facilities and an online databank of information material. +
